About

Kalan is a furniture maker and the founder of Sovereign, based in the beautiful Bay of Quinte region of Ontario.

"My first love as a maker was computers. Over two decades in the software industry, I worked with some of Canada’s top tech companies in Vancouver and Toronto, and earned an M.Sc. in Computer Science from UBC. That same passion for building elegant, useful things eventually led me to furniture making.

Inspired by ancient joinery and a desire to make lasting objects, I began teaching myself the craft—discovering a connection to my great-grandfather, who was a furniture maker in Kingston, Ontario. I now live north of Belleville, Ontario, with my wife and our daughter.

My work blends contemporary and classical styles with joinery inspired by traditional European and East-Asian techniques. I’m driven by a respect for craftsmanship and a growing interest in how—and where—things are made."

The name Sovereign is meant to evoke indepedence, self-reliance and Canada's unique identity and history. Our merchant mark — which signifies good fortune, quality and a personal guarantee — is a revival of the symbols once used by tradespeople who were not entitled to coats of arms like their aristocratic counterparts.

We use sustainably harvested, FSC-Certified Canadian hardwoods and wood products. All of our builds are designed, handcrafted and shipped in Canada.
